Peja (also known as Peć) is one of the most historically rich cities in western Kosovo. Its most significant cultural monument is the Patriarchate of Peć, a 13th-century medieval Serbian Orthodox monastery complex that is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The complex is striking with its red facades and impressive interior frescoes, positioned in a quiet garden setting along the Bistrica river. The city itself has an animated mix of old and new. The old bazaar (Çarshia e Vjetër) was faithfully rebuilt after the war and houses traditional craft shops and cafés. Here, you can experience local life firsthand and purchase handmade jewelry or textiles. Peja is also famous for its local beer, Birra Peja, brewed with the crystal-clear water from the mountains. For nature lovers, Peja is the excellent starting point for adventures in the Rugova Canyon and the Bjeshkët e Nemuna (Accursed Mountains) National Park. From hiking and climbing to cave exploration, the surroundings offer diverse opportunities. The city is easily accessible by bus from Pristina. The best time for hikers is summer, while cultural enthusiasts are welcome year-round.
