The Uvac Special Nature Reserve in southwestern Serbia is one of the most striking natural landmarks in the Balkans. The Uvac River has carved deep, winding meanders into the limestone rock between the Zlatar and Javor mountains, creating a dramatic landscape that looks like a giant green serpent from above. The intense turquoise color of the water in the artificial lakes (Uvac, Zlatar, and Radoinja) contrasts sharply with the rugged grey cliffs. The 'Molitva' (Prayer) viewpoint features the most iconic panoramic view of these hypnotic river bends. Beyond its scenery, Uvac is famous as a sanctuary for the Griffon Vulture, a rare species that was nearly extinct in the region. Today, thanks to conservation efforts, these majestic birds with a wingspan of up to three meters can often be seen soaring over the canyon. The reserve also hides a massive, largely unexplored cave system, including the Ice Cave (Ledena pećina), which is only accessible by boat and features spectacular white crystalline formations. This combination of deep canyons, rare birds, and hidden caves makes Uvac a unique ecological gem. Visitors can enjoy boat tours through the meanders, hiking along the canyon's edge, and guided birdwatching sessions. The area is best reached from the towns of Nova Varoš or Sjenica. The prime time to visit is from late spring to early autumn when the weather is stable and the boat tours are running. Uvac remains a wild and pristine destination, offering an escape into the raw power of nature far from the typical tourist trails of Europe.
