Pančić Peak (Pančićev vrh) is the highest summit of the Kopaonik mountain range in central Serbia, reaching an elevation of 2,017 meters. It is named after the renowned Serbian botanist Josif Pančić, who extensively studied the mountain's flora and was buried in a mausoleum at the summit according to his wishes. The mausoleum, built in 1951, suffered damage during the 1999 NATO bombings but has since been restored. Geologically, the peak consists of igneous rocks and features a broad, wind-swept plateau. Due to its commanding strategic position, the summit also hosts military radar facilities and telecommunications towers, which sometimes limits direct access to the very highest point. Nevertheless, Pančić Peak remains the focal point of the Kopaonik ski resort, with several key ski lifts terminating just below the summit. On clear days, the view from the top provides an impressive panorama that extends as far as the Prokletije mountains on the border with Montenegro.

Getting there
Being the highest point of a major resort, it is primarily reached via marked trails originating from the central Kopaonik ski village, or by using the operational ski lifts depending on the season.
Best season
The peak is extremely popular in winter for its premier skiing infrastructure. Summer and early autumn provide handy, refreshing conditions for high-altitude hiking, mountain biking, and general sightseeing.
Terrain & paths
The surrounding landscape is characterized by expansive, open alpine plateaus, rocky ridges, and lower forested sections. The established paths are generally wide but can be fairly steep in the final approach.
What to bring
Due to unpredictable high-mountain conditions, sturdy trekking boots and windproof, layered clothing are strictly required year-round. Always pack sun protection, as the UV index is very high on the open peak.
Parking
Enormous parking facilities are situated in the Kopaonik resort center, which serves as the primary base for ascending the peak. Finding a spot might require a small fee and patience during the peak winter rush.
Safety
The weather at this altitude can shift dramatically within minutes. Respect the mountain environment, stay strictly on authorized paths to avoid unexploded ordnance from past conflicts, and monitor storm clouds.
Time needed
Most hikers allocate around three to five hours for a full round-trip trek from the resort center. For a shorter visit, utilizing the chairlifts can cut the active walking and sightseeing time down to two hours.
