Erenik Valley

The expansive valley at the mountain's base provides infinite stillness and impressive panoramas.

At 2656 meters, Gjeravica is the highest peak in Kosovo and the second highest in the entire Prokletije range (also known as the Accursed Mountains). It is located in the west of the country near the border with Albania. The region is a mountaineer's paradise, offering an impressive alpine backdrop with rugged cliffs and wide valleys. One of the mountain's most striking features is the Gjeravica Lakes, two beautiful glacial lakes located at an altitude of over 2200 meters. The larger lake is known for its heart shape and is home to a rare species of alpine salamander. The surroundings are rich in alpine flora, including gentian and edelweiss. The climb to the peak is not technically extremely difficult but requires good fitness and navigation skills. From the top, in clear weather, you have a spectacular panoramic view over the entire Prokletije massif and far into the plains of Kosovo and Albania. The area remains largely untouched, offering a tranquility rarely found in more famous European hiking areas. There are no large hotels directly on the mountain, underscoring the authentic wilderness. The usual starting point for expeditions is the town of Junik or Deçan. From there, gravel tracks lead to higher elevations, best navigated with 4WD vehicles. The best time for an ascent is from July to September. Hikers should be prepared for sudden weather changes and bring sufficient supplies, as there are no serviced mountain huts.
