Visiting
The Dečani Mountains are part of the Prokletije range and can be visited at any time without an entrance fee. The area is great for hiking and nature experiences in pristine landscape.
Typical hours
The mountains are always accessible, but daylight hours are best for visits. In winter, some trails may be impassable due to snow; check local conditions.
Photography
Photography is allowed everywhere; the impressive views of peaks and valleys are a paradise for photographers. Drones do not require a permit for private use, but respect nature.
Time needed
For a short hike, two to three hours suffice; for full-day treks, plan six to eight hours. Trails are not always marked; a map is recommended.
Combine with
Combine a mountain trip with a visit to Visoki Dečani Monastery at the foot of the mountains. The nearby town of Peć with its Patriarchate is also worth a detour.
Getting there
The mountains are best reached from the town of Dečani by car. Parking areas exist at trailheads, but roads may be in poor condition.
Insider tip
Wear sturdy footwear and bring plenty of water and food as there are no supply points in the mountains. A GPS device or offline map is helpful as mobile network often fails.
