Gamzigrad (Felix Romuliana)
Felix Romuliana, located near Gamzigrad, is one of the most important Late Roman sites in the Balkans. This imperial palace complex was built in the late 3rd and early 4th centuries by Emperor Galerius, one of the Roman tetrarchs, in his birthplace. He named the site after his mother, Romula. Designed both as a luxurious retirement residence and a sacred monument to his divine lineage, the fortified palace is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2007. Its massive walls and decorative richness reflect the power of the empire during its transition into the late antique period. The archaeological site features impressive remains, including formidable defensive towers, grand temples dedicated to Jupiter, and thermal baths. The palace is particularly famous for its exquisite floor mosaics, which are among the finest examples of late Roman art, notably the depiction of Dionysos. On the nearby Magura Hill, visitors can see the two tumuli and the mausoleums where Galerius and his mother were buried and subsequently deified in a traditional Roman ceremony. This unique sacred landscape adds a profound historical depth to the ruins. Gamzigrad is situated in Eastern Serbia, close to the town of Zaječar. The site is well-maintained with a visitor center that provides context for the excavations. The best time to visit is from May to September to fully enjoy walking through the extensive ruins. A trip to Felix Romuliana is best complemented by a visit to the National Museum in Zaječar, where many of the original statues and the best-preserved mosaics from the palace are displayed. It remains for anyone interested in Roman history and classical architecture.
