Prokuplje serves as the industrial and administrative heart of the Toplica District in Southern Serbia. Historically, the city's economy was rooted in agriculture and food processing, highlighted by the Hissar company, a renowned producer of fruit juices and preserves. However, the economic landscape shifted significantly with the arrival of the German firm Leoni, which established its first Serbian plant here to manufacture automotive wiring systems. Leoni has since become the city's largest employer, integrating Prokuplje into the global supply chains of premium car brands. The city's industrial zones are strategically positioned to benefit from regional transport upgrades, including the planned 'Peace Highway.' Despite the rise of manufacturing, the region remains a top producer of sour cherries and grapes, sustaining a vital agro-industrial sector. Prokuplje continues to evolve, balancing its agricultural heritage with its new role as a key manufacturing node in the Serbian south.
