Visoki Dečani Monastery (Kosovo)

Weather…

The Visoki Dečani Monastery, located at the foot of the Prokletije Mountains in western Kosovo, is one of the most significant monuments of the Serbian Orthodox Church and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was built between 1327 and 1335 by the Serbian King Stefan Uroš III Dečanski and completed by his son, Stefan Dušan. The monastery's architecture is unique, blending Romanesque and Gothic elements from the Adriatic coast with Byzantine tradition, reflecting the work of Fra Vita, a Franciscan monk from Kotor. The interior walls are almost entirely covered by over 1,000 frescoes, constituting one of the richest and best-preserved collections of Byzantine painting in the world. Throughout the centuries, the monastery has survived numerous wars and political upheavals, often protected by Ottoman imperial decrees. Today, it remains an active male monastery and a major spiritual center, renowned for its peaceful atmosphere and cultural resilience.
