Gradac Monastery was established between 1277 and 1282 by Queen Helen of Anjou, the spouse of King Stefan Uroš I, and is located near the town of Raška. This spiritual center is renowned for its architectural uniqueness, as it blends traditional Byzantine concepts with Western Gothic influences, a nod to the Queen's French heritage. The main church is dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and serves as the burial site for its royal foundress. Situated on the slopes of Mount Golija, the monastery complex once featured a large refectory, monks' quarters, and a smaller church dedicated to Saint Nicholas. Throughout the Ottoman period, the monastery suffered significant damage and was left roofless for centuries, which unfortunately led to the loss of many of its original 13th-century frescoes. Systematic conservation work in the mid-20th century successfully restored the structural integrity of the complex, allowing it to function once again as an active nunnery. Visitors today can still admire the remaining fresco fragments that depict the Nemanjić dynasty and various hagiographical cycles, illustrating the high artistic standards of the Serbian medieval state.
