São João dos Angolares is the capital of the southern Caué district and is regarded as the cultural center of the Angolares, the oldest and most distinctive ethnic community in the country. According to tradition, the ancestors of the Angolares were African slaves who, after a sixteenth-century shipwreck on the island's southern coast, found refuge in the forests and developed an independent identity, language and way of life there. Fishing, drum music, distinctive ritual dances and the Angolar creole still shape village life today. Architecturally, the town is characterized by simple, colorful wooden houses, a small colonial church and the famous Roça São João dos Angolares, which under the leadership of artist and chef João Carlos Silva has become a renowned center for African art, literary festivals and creative island cuisine. Nearby beaches such as Praia Inhame and the wild coast covered with giant ferns, mahogany and palms attract nature lovers. São João dos Angolares is thus a unique place where African heritage, creative endeavor and tropical wilderness merge.
