First mentioned in chronicles in 1166, it historically functioned as a vital frontier fortress protecting the southern borders of the Novgorod Republic. Throughout the centuries, the city's military significance led to its destruction and reconstruction on multiple occasions. During World War II, it was the site of exceptionally fierce urban warfare between 1942 and 1943, eventually earning the nickname the "Small Stalingrad of the North" for its pivotal role in the Soviet counter-offensive.
