Zvenigorod is one of the oldest towns near Moscow, renowned for its natural beauty and rich spiritual heritage. The crown jewel of the town is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, founded in 1398. With its high white walls and ornate churches, it was once a favorite residence of Russian Tsars and is now considered one of Russia's most important Orthodox sanctuaries. Another historical highlight is the 'Gorodok', the site of the original Zvenigorod Kremlin. Here stands the Cathedral of the Assumption, which houses valuable frescoes attributed to Andrei Rublev. The hilly landscape surrounding the town, combined with the winding Moskva River, gives Zvenigorod an easy on the eye quality that earned it the nickname 'Russian Switzerland'. For culture lovers, Zvenigorod is also linked to the writer Anton Chekhov, who worked here as a doctor. The town is a convenient spot for day trips from Moscow, especially in summer for riverside walks or in winter for the monastery's peaceful, snowy atmosphere. Local gastronomy features traditional Russian tea rooms and monastery bakeries.
