Smolensk, majestically situated on the banks of the upper Dnieper River, is one of the oldest, most heroic, and most fiercely contested cities in Russian history. Mentioned as early as 863, the city functioned for centuries as a crucial western outpost and shield of Moscow against invaders from Poland, Lithuania, France, and Germany. This proud heritage manifests itself impressively in the massive, over six-kilometer-long Smolensk Kremlin wall, built by Tsar Boris Godunov at the end of the 16th century, which continues to dominate the cityscape to this day. The city is also known for its magnificent Assumption Cathedral, perched on a hill, whose emerald green and golden domes are a symbol of the Orthodox faith. Today, the „Hero City“ of Smolensk honors its rich past through numerous monuments and serves as a major cultural and educational metropolis in western Russia.
