Cherepovets, robustly and industrially situated on the shores of the Rybinsk Reservoir, is the undisputed metallurgical and chemical heart of the Russian Northwest. The settlement, which was elevated to city status by Catherine the Great in the 18th century, experienced an unprecedented boom during the Soviet era when the gigantic plants of Severstal (Northern Steel) and PhosAgro were built here. These massive industrial facilities continue to dominate the economy, urban life, and the iron-clad image of Cherepovets to this day. Despite this strong industrial dominance, the city is successfully striving to improve the quality of life and has unexpected cultural treasures, such as the welcoming Vereshchagin House Museum and an historic cable-stayed bridge over the Sheksna River, which was built as the first of its kind in Russia.
