Ryazan, idyllically situated on the right bank of the Oka River, is one of the oldest and most historically rich cities in Central Russia. Founded as early as 1095, the city played a central role in medieval Russia before being almost completely destroyed by the Mongols and later rebuilt. The undisputed heart of the city is the magnificent Ryazan Kremlin, an impressive ensemble of white stone featuring the majestic Cathedral of the Assumption, whose colorful domes are visible from afar. Today, Ryazan is proud of its military tradition as the home of the elite Russian airborne troops, but at the same time gives a rich cultural heritage strongly linked to the famous Russian landscape poet Sergei Yesenin, who was born nearby.
