Lipetsk, charmingly situated on the banks of the Voronezh River in the heart of Central Russia, is a city of fascinating contrasts where historical spa traditions meet industrial heavyweights directly. The city owes its first heyday to Tsar Peter the Great, who had iron foundries built here for his fleet in the early 18th century. When healing mineral springs were discovered in the 19th century, Lipetsk transformed into an elegant spa town whose mineral waters were extremely popular with the Russian aristocracy. A dramatic change occurred in the 20th century: with the founding of the gigantic Novolipetsk Steel (NLMK) combine, the city became one of the most important metallurgical centers in the world. This duality characterizes Lipetsk to this day: expansive, well-kept spa parks contrast with the massive, ultra-modern industrial facilities on the outskirts.
