Voronezh, picturesquely situated on the river of the same name and not far from its confluence with the mighty Don, is historically considered the proud cradle of the Russian Navy. It was Tsar Peter the Great who had the first warships for the Azov Fleet built here in the late 17th century, transforming the city into a flourishing center of shipbuilding. Today, Voronezh is a vital metropolis of over a million people in the fertile Black Earth region and an outstanding center for science, aviation, and industry in southwestern Russia. The city, which was heavily destroyed in World War II and lovingly rebuilt afterwards, charms visitors with its wide avenues, historic churches, and the artificial Voronezh Reservoir, which serves as the „Voronezh Sea“ for local recreation.
