Torzhok is an architectural gem in the Tver region, known for preserving its historic layout and provincial charm. The town is world-famous for its unique tradition of gold-thread embroidery, a craft that has flourished here since the 12th century. Visitors can marvel at the intricate needlework in the Gold Embroidery Museum and even try their hand at the craft. The Borisoglebsky Monastery, one of the oldest in Russia, towers over the town as a symbol of its spiritual history. Tucked away along the banks of the Tvertsa River, Torzhok features over 300 architectural monuments, from grand classicist estates to the delicate wooden Church of the Ascension. Historically a key stop on the postal road between Moscow and St. Petersburg, it was a favorite haunt of Alexander Pushkin. He famously recommended the local Pozharsky cutlets, a breaded chicken specialty that remains the town's most celebrated dish and a must-try for every traveler. The best time to visit is during summer or early autumn for pleasant river walks and golden photography hours. Torzhok is easily reached by train or car from Tver or Moscow. It provides a rich tapestry of artisan history, religious architecture, and authentic Russian culinary delights that make it a standout destination on the Golden Ring periphery.
