Kursk, located in the rolling hills of the fertile southern Russian steppe region, is one of the oldest cities in the country and breathes history on every street corner. Mentioned in documents as early as 1032, the city flourished in the Middle Ages as a thriving commercial center and spiritual fortress. However, the name Kursk was forever burned into world history books in the summer of 1943: it was here that the Battle of Kursk raged, considered the largest tank battle in military history, marking the definitive turning point in favor of the Red Army in World War II. Today, monumental triumphal arches and museums commemorate this heroic victory. Beyond that, Kursk is an important agricultural and industrial center, world-famous for the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly, the largest iron ore basin on Earth.
