Tver, elegantly situated on the banks of the upper Volga, is one of the oldest and proudest cities in Central Russia. Founded in the 12th century, the Principality of Tver was so powerful in the Middle Ages that it fought a bitter struggle with Moscow for supremacy over the Russian lands, a struggle that Tver ultimately lost. After a devastating city fire in 1763, the city was completely rebuilt at the behest of Catherine the Great according to modern, classicist principles with an elegant three-pronged street network (the „Versailles Trident“), earning it the nickname „Little Petersburg“. Renamed Kalinin during the Soviet era, Tver is today once again a major industrial and cultural center on the important axis between Moscow and Saint Petersburg, famous for its historical bridge over the Volga and its rich literary past.
