Ivanovo, the undisputed textile metropolis of Russia, is part of the historic Golden Ring and yet differs fundamentally from its other cities. Growing rapidly in the 19th century as an industrial center for calico printing and weaving mills, the city earned the title „Russian Manchester“. Because of the overwhelming majority of female workers in the textile factories, Ivanovo is affectionately known nationwide as the „City of Brides“. Another unique architectural heritage of Ivanovo is constructivism: after the revolution, the city was developed as a model for a new socialist way of life, as evidenced by avant-garde masterpieces such as the „Ship-House“ or the „Horseshoe-House“. Today, Ivanovo is a fascinating mix of the red brick of former factories, Soviet avant-garde, and quiet provincial idyll.
