Belgorod, which aptly translates to „White City“, owes its name to the massive white chalk cliffs that surround the city and give it an unmistakable, bright appearance. Founded in 1596 as a southern border fortress of the Muscovite state, the city is strategically located on the banks of the Seversky Donets River, not far from the Ukrainian border. A defining event in the history of Belgorod was the Battle of Prokhorovka in 1943 (part of the tank battle of Kursk), which took place in the immediate vicinity; for this reason, Belgorod was the first city in Russia to be honored with the title „City of Military Glory“. In recent history, the metropolis has blossomed into a prime example of urban development, famous for its immaculately clean streets, excellent infrastructure, and state-of-the-art agricultural production.
