Marc Chagall Museum

The Marc Chagall Museum in Vitebsk is a profoundly moving site dedicated to the childhood and early youth of one of the 20th century's most influential and celebrated artists. Located on Pokrovskaya Street, the modest brick house was originally built by Chagall's father in the early 1900s and miraculously survived the massive devastations of the World Wars. Meticulously restored based on archival photographs and the artist's own sketches, the house was opened as a museum in 1997. Visitors step back in time into the simple, traditional Jewish daily life of the Chagall family, as the rooms are furnished with authentic period household items. It was here that Marc Chagall spent his most formative years, and the vivid memories of this home and Vitebsk later emerged as magical, recurring motifs in his world-renowned masterpieces.
