Kolomna is one of the oldest and most appealing cities in the Moscow region. The heart of the city is the Kolomna Kremlin, a massive 16th-century fortress that, despite the passage of time, has preserved much of its walls and towers. Unlike the Moscow Kremlin, this is a living neighborhood where people still reside in historic houses within the fortress walls. The city is also a gourmet's paradise, famous for its 'Kolomna Pastila', a traditional sweet treat made from apples. The Pastila Museum gives interactive tours in period costumes where you can learn the secrets of production. Another must-visit is the Kalach Museum, where visitors can taste freshly baked traditional Russian bread. Situated at the confluence of the Oka and Moskva rivers, Kolomna has scenic waterfront views and numerous gold-domed churches. The city is a major spiritual center with several active monasteries. It is a great year-round destination, but especially during the autumn apple harvest. Kolomna is easily reachable from Moscow by train in about two hours.
