Tutayev
Tutayev is a gem on the Golden Ring that stands out for its unusual layout. The city was formed by merging the historic settlements of Romanov and Borisoglebsk, which face each other but are separated by the mighty Volga River. As there is no bridge, residents and visitors must use ferries or boats, giving the town an unparalleled, timeless charm. The architectural highlight is the Resurrection Cathedral on the Borisoglebsk side, which houses one of Russia's largest and most revered icons. On the Romanov side, visitors find pretty wooden houses and numerous churches perched on the hills above the river. The town is also famous for the 'Romanov' breed of sheep, which was developed here. The hilly landscape features wonderful viewpoints of the Volga and passing ships. The best time to visit is during the summer when the ferry service is in full swing, or in winter when you can cross the Volga on foot over the ice. Local cuisine is characterized by Volga fish dishes and traditional Russian home cooking. Tutayev is conveniently located between Yaroslavl and Rybinsk.
