Oreshek Fortress (Russia)

Weather…

The Oreshek Fortress, situated on a tiny island exactly where the Neva River flows out of Lake Ladoga, is one of the most historically significant defensive structures in northwestern Russia. Founded in 1323 by the citizens of Novgorod to protect vital trade routes to the Baltic Sea from the Swedes, the facility changed hands several times before Tsar Peter the Great definitively recaptured it for Russia during the Great Northern War. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Oreshek gained notoriety as the "Russian Bastille", an infamous high-security prison where political dissidents, Decembrists, and even members of the imperial family were held captive. The fortress wrote a heroic chapter during World War II: a tiny Soviet garrison withstood the German siege for almost 500 days, thereby preventing the complete blockade of Leningrad across Lake Ladoga. Today, the heavily scarred red brick walls and the poignant memorial proclaim this unprecedented endurance.
