Smolny Convent (Russia)

Weather…

The Smolny Convent in Saint Petersburg is a radiant masterpiece of Russian Baroque architecture, whose striking blue-and-white facades and gold-adorned domes can be seen from afar. The convent complex was designed beginning in 1748 by the renowned Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli. It was originally commissioned by Empress Elizabeth I, who planned to spend her final years living there as a nun. The magnificent Resurrection Cathedral forms the centerpiece of the ensemble, impressing visitors with its elegant proportions and ornamental details. Although the exterior was completed according to Rastrelli's designs, the cathedral's interior remained unfinished for decades due to wars and financial shortages, finally receiving a Neoclassical interior only in the 19th century. The convent served for a long time as a prominent educational institute for noble girls, and today it stands as a cherished architectural monument and a popular concert venue.
