Kasimov (Russia)

Weather…

Kasimov is a unique example of cultural and religious harmony in Russia. The town was once the center of the Kasimov Khanate, a vassal state where Tatar princes ruled under Russian suzerainty. This legacy is still visible today in the cityscape, where the silhouette of a 15th-century minaret stands alongside the onion domes of Orthodox churches. Visitors should not miss the Old Mosque with its stone minaret and the Shahghali Khan Mausoleum, one of the oldest Tatar monuments in the region. At the same time, the town impresses with the monumental Cathedral of the Ascension and splendid 18th and 19th-century merchant houses that testify to the town's former wealth as a trade center on the Oka River. Situated on the high bank of the Oka, the town has wide views of the river landscape. Gastronomy in Kasimov provides an interesting blend of Russian cuisine and Tatar specialties like chak-chak. The best time to visit is during the summer for river activities or early autumn. Getting here usually involves a trip from Ryazan or Murom.
