Alexander Nevsky Lavra (Russia)

Weather…

The Alexander Nevsky Lavra, one of Russia's most prestigious religious institutions, is located at the end of the famous Nevsky Prospect in St. Petersburg. Tsar Peter the Great personally founded this monastery in 1710 on the spot where he mistakenly believed the historic Battle of the Neva took place in 1240. To solidify the importance of his new capital, he ordered the holy relics of the medieval warrior prince and national saint Alexander Nevsky to be transferred here from Vladimir in 1724. The architectural ensemble is dominated by the grandiose Trinity Cathedral, built in the Neoclassical style. Today, however, the Lavra is world-renowned primarily for its historical cemeteries. In the Tikhvin Cemetery (Necropolis of the Masters of Arts) and the Lazarus Cemetery rest the mortal remains of countless giants of Russian culture, science, and music, including Fyodor Dostoevsky, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Modest Mussorgsky, and Mikhail Lomonosov.
