Peter and Paul Fortress (Russia)

Weather…

The Peter and Paul Fortress, built on the tiny Hare Island at the mouth of the Neva River, marks the actual birthplace of the city of St. Petersburg. Founded by Tsar Peter the Great on May 27, 1703, during the Great Northern War, this star-shaped citadel was intended to protect the newly conquered territory from Swedish counterattacks. Although it never saw military action, the fortress served darker purposes for centuries: it functioned as the Tsarist Empire's most notorious political prison, where prominent figures such as Fyodor Dostoevsky, Maxim Gorky, and Leon Trotsky were incarcerated. The architectural masterpiece of the complex, however, is the impressive Peter and Paul Cathedral, whose 122.5-meter-tall golden spire was for a long time the tallest structure in Russia. This magnificent cathedral serves as the solemn final resting place for almost all Russian monarchs, from Peter the Great to the remains of the last Romanov royal family.
