The Kazan Cathedral is one of the most distinctive landmarks on the Nevsky Prospect in the heart of Saint Petersburg. It was built between 1801 and 1811 according to the designs of the Russian architect Andrey Voronikhin. The architectural concept was heavily inspired by St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, which is particularly evident in the semi-circular colonnade of 96 Corinthian columns that blends harmoniously into the cityscape. The cathedral is dedicated to the famous icon of Our Lady of Kazan, one of the most venerated holy relics of Russian Orthodoxy. Shortly after its completion, the church acquired additional historical significance as a memorial to the Russian victory in the Patriotic War of 1812. It houses the tomb of the legendary Field Marshal Mikhail Kutuzov, alongside captured French military flags and the keys to conquered fortresses.

Visiting
Kazan Cathedral in St. Petersburg is an active Orthodox church that can be visited by both worshippers and tourists. The main hall with its magnificent iconostasis is open to the public.

The cathedral is typically open daily from early morning until evening, with breaks during services. Tourists are asked to respect quiet during prayers; photography is often not allowed during liturgy.
Photography
Photography without flash inside the cathedral is usually allowed as long as no services are taking place. The impressive colonnade and exterior façade are always photogenic and unrestricted.
Time needed
A short visit to the cathedral takes about 30 to 45 minutes to see the interior. If you also climb the colonnade and enjoy the view, allow one hour.

The cathedral is located on Nevsky Prospekt, St. Petersburg's main street, near Palace Square and the Hermitage. Combining it with a walk along Nevsky and a visit to the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood is convenient.
Getting there
The cathedral is easily reached on foot from Nevsky Prospekt metro station (line 2) or Gostiny Dvor (line 3). Many bus and trolleybus lines stop right in front of the cathedral.
Insider tip
Visit the cathedral early in the morning before the tourist crowds arrive to enjoy a peaceful atmosphere. Don't miss the tomb of Kutuzov in the northern side aisle - an important historical detail.
