The Yusupov Palace on the banks of the Moika River in the historic center of St. Petersburg is one of the city's most elegant noble residences and a fascinating 18th-century architectural jewel. It belonged for over five generations to the exceptionally wealthy Yusupov family, one of the richest aristocratic dynasties in pre-revolutionary Russia. The palatial interiors are dramatic: from opulent state rooms featuring sparkling chandeliers and precious paintings to an intimate private Rococo-style home theater, every room reflects immeasurable wealth and refined taste. The building gained worldwide historical notoriety during the freezing night of December 16 to 17, 1916. In the dark basement rooms of this palace, a group of aristocratic conspirators led by young Prince Felix Yusupov orchestrated the gruesome and still legendary assassination of Grigori Rasputin, the controversial healer and advisor to the Tsarist family. Today, visitors can explore the reconstructed crime scene exhibition.
