The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood in Saint Petersburg is one of the city's most opulent and historically significant structures. It was built between 1883 and 1907 exactly on the spot where Tsar Alexander II was fatally wounded in an assassination bombing in 1881. Architecturally, the church's colorful onion domes and highly ornate facade stand in stark contrast to the dominant Neoclassical and Baroque architecture of Saint Petersburg, drawing inspiration instead from medieval Russian designs. The interior of the church is overwhelmingly beautiful, containing over 7,500 square meters of intricate mosaics designed by prominent Russian artists such as Viktor Vasnetsov. During the Soviet era, the building endured periods of neglect, serving variously as a vegetable warehouse and a temporary morgue, before reopening as a state museum in 1997 after decades of meticulous restoration.
