Hermitage Museum

The Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg is among the oldest and largest museums of art and culture in the world. It was founded in 1764 by Empress Catherine the Great following her acquisition of an impressive collection of over 200 paintings from Berlin. The museum complex along the banks of the Neva River comprises six historic buildings, the most prominent being the Winter Palace, the former main residence of the Russian Tsars.
