Hermitage Museum (Russia)

Weather…

The Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg is among the oldest and largest museums of art and culture in the world. It was founded in 1764 by Empress Catherine the Great following her acquisition of an impressive collection of over 200 paintings from Berlin. The museum complex along the banks of the Neva River comprises six historic buildings, the most prominent being the Winter Palace, the former main residence of the Russian Tsars. The vast collection houses around three million items, featuring masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance, Flemish Baroque, Impressionist works, as well as an extensive array of classical antiquities and Egyptian artifacts. To protect the invaluable artworks from rodents, the museum traditionally employs its own colony of cats, a practice originating from a 1745 decree by Empress Elizabeth. The Hermitage stands as a monumental architectural gem and a centerpiece of European cultural heritage.
