Goričko

Goričko is a distinct hilly landscape located in the northeasternmost corner of Slovenia, comprising the northern part of the Prekmurje region. The area is protected as the Goričko Landscape Park, established in 2003, and forms part of a trilateral cross-border park together with Raab in Austria and Őrség in Hungary. Geologically, the region shows evidence of ancient volcanic activity, most notably at the site of Grad Castle, which is situated atop an extinct volcanic cone. This castle is one of the largest in Slovenia and is famous for its 365 rooms, symbolically matching the days of the year. The terrain is characterized by a mosaic-like pattern of small fields, vineyards, orchards, and extensive forests of beech and oak, supporting a rich variety of wildlife. Cultural life in Goričko is influenced by its proximity to the borders, blending Slovenian, Hungarian, and Austrian traditions in its architecture and local crafts. The region's relative isolation has allowed for the preservation of traditional farming methods and a significant number of heirloom fruit varieties that are rare elsewhere in Europe.
