Alexander Palace (Russia)

Weather…

The Alexander Palace in Tsarskoye Selo, a suburb of Saint Petersburg, is an exquisite example of Neoclassical architecture and a site of profound historical significance. It was commissioned by Catherine the Great for her favorite grandson, the future Tsar Alexander I, and was completed between 1792 and 1796 by the Italian master architect Giacomo Quarenghi. The elegant facade of the palace is dominated by an impressive Corinthian colonnade. The palace gained its historical fame primarily as the favored and final residence of Tsar Nicholas II and his family. The Romanovs spent a quiet life here, shielded from the tumultuous court affairs, until they were placed under house arrest in the palace following the February Revolution of 1917, and eventually deported to Siberia. Thanks to extensive restoration work in recent years, visitors today can once again explore the authentically reconstructed private apartments of the last imperial family.
