Church of Csaroda (Hungary)

Weather…

The Reformed Church of Csaroda is a masterpiece of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, built in the late 13th century. Located in the village of Csaroda, it is famous for its exceptionally well-preserved medieval wall paintings, particularly the 14th-century frescoes of 'smiling saints.' The building features a single-nave structure with a narrow, square-ended sanctuary and a slender wooden spire added in the 18th century. During the Reformation, the interior was whitewashed, which unintentionally helped preserve the Catholic-era murals until their rediscovery in the 20th century. The church is surrounded by a peaceful cemetery and stands as a symbol of the spiritual and artistic continuity of the Szatmár region. It remains one of the most photographed medieval village churches in Hungary.
