Lake Vaja (Hungary)

Weather…

Lake Vaja is a unique nature reserve in Northeast Hungary, globally recognized for its rare floating islands, a phenomenon known locally as 'úszóláp'. Spanning approximately 78 hectares within the sandy dunes of the Nyírség region, the lake has been under official environmental protection since 1971. These floating islands are composed of dense mats of peat moss and aquatic vegetation that drift across the water's surface, sometimes supporting small birch and willow trees. The lake serves as a living museum of post-glacial flora, housing rare species such as marsh cinquefoil and various types of orchids. It is also an important sanctuary for protected wildlife, including otters, rare amphibians, and numerous migratory bird species. While parts of the lake are open for regulated fishing, the most sensitive areas are strictly preserved for scientific research. Educational trails around the lake allow visitors to explore this fragile wetland ecosystem without disturbing its natural balance.
