Nagyhalász is a historic town in the Rétköz region of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County, located in northeastern Hungary near the Tisza River. Its name translates to Great Fisherman, an homage to the royal fishermen who settled here in the Middle Ages to exploit the once-vast marshlands of the Rétköz. Until the major regulation of the Tisza River in the 19th century, the settlement functioned almost like an island amidst wetlands, where the inhabitants relied on fishing, reed harvesting, and traditional water-based trades. The architectural pride of the town is the Lónyay-Vay Mansion, a Neoclassical manor house that reflects the status of the regional aristocracy; today, it houses the municipal library and community center. During the 20th century, the town was notable for its industrial hemp factory, which played a major role in the local economy for generations. Currently, Nagyhalász is surrounded by the fertile soils of the Szabolcs region, famous for its apple and cherry orchards. The nearby oxbow lakes and canals of the Tisza remain ecological treasures, attracting nature enthusiasts and anglers, thus maintaining the town's ancient connection to the water and its namesake fishing tradition.
