Latorica Protected Landscape Area (Slovakia)

Weather…

The Latorica Protected Landscape Area in southeastern Slovakia, near the borders with Ukraine and Hungary, covers an area of 156 square kilometers and protects one of the most valuable floodplain systems in Central Europe. The landscape is largely shaped by the eponymous river, whose unrestrained dynamics have created a complex network of oxbow lakes, dead river branches, dense alluvial forests, and extensive, periodically flooded wet meadows. This intact mosaic of aquatic habitats is of such global ecological importance that large parts of the area have been included in the Ramsar Convention list. For ornithologists, the region is a paradise, serving as an essential nesting and resting site for numerous endangered waterfowl, including the majestic black stork and the purple heron. A remarkable herpetofauna also thrives in the calm waters; the strictly protected European pond turtle finds one of its last intact refuges on Slovak territory here.
