Palanok Castle is one of the most significant historical landmarks in Western Ukraine. It sits atop a 68-meter volcanic hill overlooking the city of Mukachevo. The fortress is divided into three distinct levels: the Lower, Middle, and Upper Castles, which were expanded in stages between the 14th and 17th centuries. The castle is most famous for its role in Central European history, particularly the heroic defense led by Ilona Zrínyi against Habsburg forces from 1685 to 1688. Today, the castle complex houses museums covering local history, ethnography, and art. Visitors can explore the fortifications, the castle chapel, and the legendary 85-meter-deep well. From its bastions, guests can enjoy a wide-open panoramic view of the Latorytsia River valley and the surrounding Carpathian Mountains. A statue of Ilona Zrínyi and her son, Francis II Rákóczi, stands in the upper courtyard. The castle is accessible year-round and has a well-developed tourist infrastructure. It frequently hosts cultural festivals, medieval reenactments, and craft fairs. As Mukachevo is a major regional transport hub, the castle is easily reachable from Uzhhorod or Lviv. It remains site for those interested in medieval architecture and the complex military history of the region.

The castle is open to the public. You can explore the outer courtyards, towers, and some interior rooms. Much of the fortress is accessible, but certain areas may be closed for restoration.
