Nagyecsed, located in the Szatmár Plain, is a town of profound historical and mythical significance, primarily known for its association with the now-drained Ecsed Marsh. During the Middle Ages, it was the site of the formidable Ecsed Castle, the ancestral seat of the powerful Báthory family, where legend tells of the hero Vid slaying a marsh dragon, an exploit commemorated in the family's coat of arms. Until the late 19th century, the settlement existed as an island within a vast, impenetrable wetland system that shaped a unique local culture based on marsh-fishing and waterborne transport. The drainage of the Ecsed Marsh was one of the largest hydraulic engineering projects in Hungarian history, transforming the "mystical" swamp into vast agricultural lands, though it fundamentally altered the local ecology. Nagyecsed is also a celebrated center of folk culture, particularly famous for the "Ecsedi Verbunkos" (recruiting dance) and spirited Roma dance traditions that are essential components of the Hungarian national dance heritage. The town takes great pride in its musical legacy, maintaining active ensembles that showcase these centuries-old rhythms. Historically, the castle of Ecsed played a crucial role as a border fortress between the Principality of Transylvania and Royal Hungary, serving as a refuge for princes and a treasury for national jewels during turbulent centuries.
