The Kraszna River is a left-bank tributary of the Tisza, originating in the Apuseni Mountains of Romania and spanning approximately 193 kilometers. It flows through Sălaj and Satu Mare counties in Romania before entering Hungary's Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county. Historically, the river was the primary water source for the Ecsed Marsh, which was once Central Europe's largest continuous wetland system until its drainage in the late 19th century. This massive environmental intervention redirected the river into a regulated canal, transforming the landscape into fertile agricultural plains but significantly altering the local ecosystem. Today, the river remains an essential part of the regional water management system, providing irrigation and flood protection for nearby communities. Recent conservation efforts focus on improving water quality and protecting the remaining natural habitats along its banks.
