Mariapocs Pilgrimage Church
The Mariapocs Pilgrimage Church is one of Hungary's most significant religious sites and an officially designated National Shrine, central to the Greek Catholic faith. Its international fame began in 1696 when the icon of the Virgin Mary reportedly shed tears during a mass, leading to its relocation to Vienna and the creation of copies. The present-day monumental Baroque structure was constructed between 1731 and 1756, featuring iconic twin towers and a lavishly decorated interior with a grand iconostasis. In 1991, Pope John Paul II visited the shrine, an event that drew hundreds of thousands of pilgrims and cemented the location's status as a bridge between Eastern and Western Christianity. The church serves as a spiritual hub for pilgrims from across Central Europe, especially during major Marian feast days. Architecturally, it stands as a masterpiece of 18th-century ecclesiastical design, housing numerous historical artifacts and religious treasures. Today, it continues to welcome over half a million visitors annually, seeking spiritual solace and witnessing the enduring legacy of the miraculous icon.
