Uzhhorod Castle (Ukraine)

Weather…

Uzhhorod Castle is the oldest and most significant historical landmark in the city of Uzhhorod, located in the westernmost part of Ukraine. While first mentioned in the 9th century as a wooden fort, the castle's current stone structure primarily dates back to the 16th century under the rule of the Drugeth family, an Italian-born noble house that owned it for 360 years. The fortification features massive walls and corner bastions designed to withstand contemporary siege weaponry, surrounded by a deep dry moat. Inside the fortress stands a grand palace with over 40 rooms, which now houses the Transcarpathian Museum of Regional History. Key highlights include the castle chapel's frescoes and the spacious inner courtyard featuring a prominent bronze statue of the mythical Turul bird. The castle embodies the complex history of the Transcarpathian region, which transitioned through Kievan Rus, the Kingdom of Hungary, and the Habsburg Empire. Today, it remains a symbol of the city and a focal point for regional tourism and education.
