Berehove, historically known as Lampertsháza, is a unique city in the Zakarpattia Oblast of western Ukraine, located near the Hungarian border. The city serves as the cultural center of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine and is characterized by its bilingual signage and Central European atmosphere. Berehove is primarily renowned for its thermal springs, which are pumped from a depth of over 1,000 meters and used for medicinal purposes in large open-air pools. The city's history dates back to the 11th century when it was founded by Prince Lampert, and it long served as the seat of Bereg County within the Kingdom of Hungary. Architectural highlights include the former count's palace of Gábor Bethlen, built in 1629, and the 15th-century Gothic Roman Catholic Church. The surrounding hills are a significant wine-producing region, famous for their high-quality white wines. Today, Berehove is a popular destination for spa and wine tourism and hosts the Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian Institute.
