Vynohradiv, formerly known as Nagyszőlős, is a scenic city in the Zakarpattia Oblast of southwestern Ukraine, situated at the foot of Chorna Hora (Black Mountain). The city lies on the right bank of the Tysa River and possesses a centuries-old tradition of viticulture, reflected in its name, which translates to "City of Grapes." First documented in 1262, Vynohradiv served for centuries as a vital trade center and the seat of Ugocsa County within the Kingdom of Hungary. Among its most significant historical monuments are the ruins of Kankiv Castle, which once guarded the salt trade routes, and the Baroque Perényi Palace, the ancestral seat of the noble Perényi family. The city is noted for its exceptionally mild climate, enabling the cultivation of heat-loving crops such as grapes and apricots. Architecturally, the city has an intriguing mix featuring a 15th-century Franciscan monastery and the Gothic-origin Ascension Cathedral. Today, Vynohradiv is a major regional hub for food processing and wine production, attracting visitors with its historic old town and the natural beauty of the Chorna Hora reserve.
