Horse mill of Tarpa
The Horse Mill of Tarpa is one of the most significant industrial heritage sites in North-Eastern Hungary and the only one of its kind in the region preserved at its original location. Built in the 19th century, specifically around 1885, the structure is an outstanding example of traditional folk architecture and pre-industrial milling technology. The mill consists of a large, conical shingled roof protecting the massive driving mechanism, where horses moved a giant wooden gear wheel. Inside, visitors can admire the massive oak beams and precisely crafted wooden gears that ground the local farmers' grain for generations. Following a comprehensive restoration in the 1980s, the mill now functions as a museum, vividly illustrating the arduous daily work in the Great Plain region before the era of electrification and steam power.
