The Tur River originates in the Oas Mountains of Romania and flows for approximately 94 kilometers before joining the Tisza River near Szatmárcseke. Its drainage basin covers an area of about 1,261 square kilometers, with a significant portion located in the Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg region of Hungary. Historically, the river was notorious for its frequent flooding, which led to extensive regulation works in the 19th and 20th centuries to stabilize its course. The so-called 'Old Tur' (Öreg-Túr) branch has managed to preserve its original meandering character, making it a premier destination for water tourism and nature photography. The river's ecosystem is part of the Upper Tisza nature reserve, providing a habitat for rare species such as the common kingfisher and various protected amphibians. Today, the Tur represents a successful example of cross-border environmental management, balancing agricultural needs with the preservation of natural floodplain habitats.

The Túr River is often easily accessible in the border area via rural country roads and agricultural tracks. Smaller border towns typically offer uncomplicated starting points for your explorations.
Best season
A visit is generally recommended during the warm and dry summer months when the local nature is in full bloom. In spring, the area can sometimes be somewhat more difficult to access due to high water.
Terrain & paths
The terrain around the river is typically flat, but heavily characterized by untouched nature and floodplain forests. The existing paths are generally completely unpaved and can be slightly uneven in places.
What to bring
Waterproof footwear and long trousers are mostly advisable for hikes through the highly natural and wild areas. A strong insect repellent is very often of great advantage in the wooded and damp zones.
Parking
Parking lots in the classic sense are quite rare; cars are often parked safely on the edge of access roads. It must always be ensured to keep the local dirt roads completely clear for agricultural vehicles.
Safety
The river is ecologically highly valuable and sensitive, so visitors should definitely stay on the recognizable paths. Swimming is neither common nor recommended in most places due to the overall structure.
Time needed
About two to three hours should be planned for an interesting nature exploration or a very quiet walk. Those who definitely want to delve deeper into the fascinating ecology often plan for half a day.
