Ljubuški Fortress
The Ljubuški Fortress, majestically situated atop the 396-meter-high Butorovica mountain, is one of the most impressive medieval defensive structures in Herzegovina. The fortification was built in the 15th century by Duke (Herceg) Stjepan Vukčić Kosača and served as a central military and strategic stronghold of his rule, which is why it is often locally referred to as 'Stjepan-grad' (Stephen's City). The massive fortress complex consisted of a central citadel (keep), robust defensive walls punctuated with embrasures, several cisterns for water supply, and auxiliary buildings for the military garrison. Following the Ottoman conquest in 1463, the castle was significantly expanded and reinforced to defend against potential Venetian attacks from the Adriatic coast. Today, the romantic ruins of the fortress are recognized as an important national monument. The steep ascent is rewarded with a spectacular panoramic view that, on clear days, stretches across the fertile Trebižat River valley all the way to the Adriatic Sea.
